Dr.-Ing. Christian Grimme

Principal Investigator

Christian Grimme is a computer scientist with specific interest in algorithmic design. He is especially active in the field of computational intelligence and its transfer to application and social use. Since 2013, he is a post-doctoral research member of the information systems and statistics group at the University of Münster.
In 2012 he received his doctoral degree in computer science at TU Dortmund University with a thesis on nature-inspired algorithms for multi-criteria optimization. Before that, from 2006 onwards, he was involved in multiple research projects on computing grid networks in climate research, humanities, and physics. Further information

Dr. Mike Preuss


Mike Preuss is a computer scientist at European Research Center for Information Systems (ERCIS), University of Muenster. He received his PhD in 2013 from the Chair of Algorithm Engineering at TU Dortmund. His research interests lie in the field of evolutionary algorithms for real-valued problems, namely on multimodal and multiobjective optimization, and on computational intelligence methods for computer games, especially in procedural content generation (PGC) and realtime strategy games (RTS).
He is an associate editor of the IEEE TCIAIG (Transactions on Computational Intelligence and AI in Games) and Springer’s SWEVO journal and has been a member of the organizational team of several conferences in the last years, in various functions.

Department of Communication, research focus online communication (Prof. Dr. Thorsten Quandt).

Prof. Dr. Thorsten Quandt,

Co-Principle Investigator

Thorsten Quandt is Professor of Communication Studies at the University of Münster.
He was Chair of Online Communication and Interactive Media at the University of Hohenheim from 2009-2012, where he also served as the Director of the Institute of Communication Studies in 2012.
From 2007-2008 he was Assistant Professor of journalism research at the Free University Berlin, where he also served as a Guest Professor in 2006. He has also been working as a lecturer and researcher at various other universities, including the LMU Munich, the Berlin University of the Arts, and the Technical University Ilmenau. He was also a visiting professor at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and a visiting scholar at the Indiana University, Bloomington.
He (co)published more than 100 scientific articles and several books. His work was awarded with several scientific prizes, including various Top Paper Awards and the dissertation award of the DGPuK. He’s currently an Associate Editor of the Journal of Communication, and an Executive Board Member of ECREA.  His research and teaching fields include online communication, media innovation research, digital games and journalism. Dr. Florian Wintterlin


Florian Wintterlin is a communication scientist at the University of Münster. After finishing his doctoral thesis on the trustworthiness of social media sources as perceived by journalists, he joined the team in January 2018. He now works at the research division “online communication” at the Institute for Communication Studies. Apart from research on journalism, he also conducts studies in political communication and trust in news media. His specific interest lies in the perception of user-generated content as a source and the effects of social media on political trust. Further information

Svenja Boberg M.A.

Research Associate

Svenja Boberg is a PhD student and communication scientist with a special interest in identifiying attempts to influence public opinion and propaganda on a textual level. In summer 2016 she joined the team at the Institute for Communication Science, research focus online communication, at the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster.
She graduated in 2016 at the WWU with a thesis on “getting news on Facebook and the impact of friend’s recommendations”. Before that, she worked as a tutor and student assistent in several research projects at the Institute of Communication Science in Münster. Further information

Tim Schatto-Eckrodt M.A.

Research Associate

Tim Schatto-Eckrodt is a communication scientist, who researches methods to identify attempts to influence public opinion through online-propaganda. He worked as a tutor and student assistant at the Institute for Communication Science (IfK) at the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster, where he was, among other things, involved in the programming of data analysis tools. Since October 2017 he is a member of the chair of online communication of the IfK. His master’s thesis dealt with diffusion and the acceptance of new technologies. Further information

Prof. Dr. Konrad Rieck


Konrad Rieck is Professor of Computer Science at Technische Universität Braunschweig, where he leads the Institute of System Security. Prior to this, he worked at the University of Göttingen, Technische Universität Berlin and Fraunhofer Institute FIRST. He graduated from Freie Universität Berlin in 2004 and received a Doctorate in Computer Science from Technische Universität Berlin in 2009. Konrad Rieck is a recipient of the CAST/GI Dissertation Award IT-Security and a Google Faculty Research Award. His interests revolve around computer security and machine learning, including the detection of computer attacks, the analysis of malicious code, and the discovery of vulnerabilities. Dr. Ansgar Kellner


Ansgar Kellner is a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute of System Security. He graduated from Technische Universität Braunschweig in 2008 and received a doctorate in Computer Science from the University of Göttingen in 2012.
